This piece is inspired by a spectrum of connection I found in Tango; the space between an open and close embrace. Open embrace quickly became my comfort zone, a position where I can maintain my sense of self with ease. Close embrace became a desire, executed in fragmented synchronicity and enlarged clashes.
I didn’t know why this theme of connection wouldn’t leave my mind, I just new I had to capture the feeling of it, which is what inspired this mono print. Months later, when the elevation serie was finished, I realised just how significant this theme was...
Open or close embrace?
Is the recurring question that keeps popping up in my life. Allowing the other to come closer,but not to close. The right space for a specific step. The right distance for a specific connection. A colleague, a friend, a partner, a parent.
Looking at the mono prints of open and close embrace, I realise that it’s a matter of inner connection. The more I listen to my first instinct, the more I slow down when in doubt, the better I know my answer. “Yes come closer”, “Pause” or “Stop and go back".
This painting is a gentle reminder to hold on to your inner voice, against all external discomfort.
